What is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Unlike medications, TMS has minimal side effects and no systemic impact.

How Does TMS Work?

TMS therapy targets specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation using focused magnetic pulses. This process helps to reactivate neural connections and promote brain health, leading to significant improvements in depressive symptoms.

Proven Results

Clinical studies show that 83% of patients experience measurable relief from depression, and 62% achieve full remission. TMS offers a new hope for those struggling with treatment-resistant depression.

NeuroStar TMS Machine

Treating depression at the source

NeuroStar uses focused magnetic pulses (similar to an MRI), that revitalize inactive synapses in your brain.9 “Waking up” these connections can have a lasting effect on neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission from depression a reality for many people.

FAQs

Depression is a serious medical illness that lasts two or more weeks and interferes with a person’s ability to carry out daily tasks and enjoy activities that previously brought pleasure.

There is no known cure for depression. However, with effective treatment, many patients can remain symptom-free and can lead normal lives.

Yes, depression is known to be hereditary so depression may occur in some people who have a particular genetic makeup that makes them more likely to develop depression. However, the exact nature of these genetic characteristics is not known.

There are non-drug and drug therapies available to treat depression. Depression is often initially treated with psychotherapy (talk therapy) and antidepressant medications administered together. Although antidepressants can be effective for some patients, they do not work for everybody. Additionally, antidepressants often result in unwanted side effects.

Many patients do not receive adequate benefit from antidepressant medications and/or cannot tolerate the side effects caused by them.16 For these patients, alternative treatments that involve the use of a medical device are available. These treatments include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS).

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses short pulses of a magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. The pulsed magnetic field may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitters levels. Treating depression with transcranial magnetic stimulation, also referred to as NeuroStar TMS Therapy®, provides a breakthrough depression treatment for those who have not benefited from antidepressant medications.

NeuroStar is a non-drug and non-invasive treatment for depression, anxiety symptoms associated with depression and OCD delivered in a doctor’s office. You recline comfortably in a NeuroStar chair (much like a dentist’s chair or spa chair) during treatment. During a treatment session, precisely targeted magnetic pulses stimulate the mood-regulating areas in the brain.12,15 There is no anesthesia or sedation. You are fully awake and alert during treatment, and you can resume normal activities immediately after a treatment session.

If you suffer from depression, anxiety symptoms associated with depression, or OCD but have not benefitted from your current medications—or are not happy with their side effects—NeuroStar Advanced Therapy may be right for you. NeuroStar may also be a good choice if you have tried switching medications for depression but have still not found remission from your symptoms.

An FDA-cleared depression treatment, NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is safe and easy to tolerate. Because it’s non-drug and non-invasive, it does not have the common systemic side effects of medication. NeuroStar does not have any effects on cognition or sleep. The most common side effect associated with NeuroStar is mild to moderate pain or discomfort that typically subsides within the first week of treatment.

During the session, you will feel a tapping sensation on your head. Each treatment session lasts around 19 minutes. Some NeuroStar patients experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during the first week of treatment. This is usually temporary and subsides in subsequent treatments.

NeuroStar TMS Therapy for depression is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare, usually after medication options have proven ineffective in your major depression treatment.

**Outcomes Registry data was published by Sackeim HA, et al. J Affective Disorders, 2020, 277(12):65-74. The outcomes reported represent the subset of study patients for which the CGI-S data was reported before and after an acute course of NeuroStar TMS. Patients were treated under real-world conditions where patients may have been prescribed concomitant depression treatments including medications. “Measurable relief” was defined as a CGI-S score <=3 and “complete remission” was defined as a CGI-S score <=2 at the end of treatment.

***Patients received more than one course of treatment and were treated with standard of care. Standard of care also included medications. CGI-S represents the scale used to define response and remission.

Adult Indications for Use
The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Adolescent Indications for Use
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is indicated as an adjunct for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescent patients (15-21).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.

Important Safety Information
The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
