Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Drug-free Depression Treatment That Works For You with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
TMS stands for “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation”, a non-drug treatment for major depression. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses, similar to an MRI, to reignite dormant connections in the brain and help your brain function the way it was meant to. It is not a drug, “shock” therapy, or surgery. TMS therapy is a safe, effective treatment for depression without the side effects medication can have. It is considered to activate brain regions that are less active in depression. What CIP for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) ?
The Center for Integrative Psychiatry pays attention to the details. Get longer lasting results with fewer side effects. From thorough insurance benefit investigations and timely appointments, to patient safety and comfort, we strive to create a positive patient experience instead of just a procedure. Our Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation staff go through extensive training and perform TMS safely and efficiently.
TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is a less invasive but very effective treatment for depression. It is a new and effective way to treat depression. It is actually an option for the type of depression which fails to respond to a couple of antidepressant medication trials, depending on which insurance company you have. This type of depression is called Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD).
According to Harvard University, once TRD is identified, medications alone may not resolve the depression completely and sometimes we will need some additional assistance. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to the rescue!
TMS is basically an MRI scanner signal, sometimes coiled up into the size of a typical cell phone, or stretched out into the shape of a hat. This magnetic coil is then positioned very precisely on the scalp and it delivers a magnetic signal through the bone to the parts of the brain where we believe depression lives, the DLPFC!!! TMS has been shown to improve depression in 62 out of 100 people, and it has been shown to almost completely treat TRD, which means to almost cure it, in about 52 out of 100 people. That’s impressive!
At CIP we offer TMS as just one of the strategies to help treat depression and TRD. The staff at The Center for Integrative Psychiatry would love to be of assistance on your healing journey.
You can get treated for transcranial magnetic stimulation here at The Center for Integrative Psychiatry even if you have a psychiatrist or psych prescriber!
Our goal will be to work collaboratively with your provider to facilitate your TMS treatments and then have you go back to follow up with your psychiatrist and continue with him or her. If however, you do not have a psychiatric provider, we would be happy to discuss any way in which you feel we could be of assistance.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a fairly consistent type of treatment especially in the beginning, where we would get to know each other very well over the course of the first two months. But the treatments then space out in the maintenance phase after the initial treatment set is complete to about 1-2 times per week.
We celebrate your success!

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive treatment for depression which uses magnets to help where medications have not been helpful. It’s safe and definitely effective. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcranial_magnetic_stimulation
TMS has been shown to be very effective and is typically offered after a patient has had little success with at least one or two medications previously.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is not painful. Sometimes however the location of where the magnetic signal enters the scalp can become tender, but this will usually resolve in a few minutes or hours at most.
TMS is absolutely not ECT. ECT is where electricity is applied through the scalp to the brain inducing a seizure-like reaction which resets the brain like defibrillating the heart in the emergency room. TMS is nothing like that at all. With TMS, there’s no electricity applied to the head, it’s magnetics. There’s no anesthesia, no memory loss generally reported, and little to no seizure risk (unless you have a history of seizures or epilepsy). TMS is an outpatient procedure, where you can drive yourself home afterwards with no problems.
Yes! Insurance companies sometimes have different criteria which we would have to ensure that you meet before requesting the prior authorization. But we will help you through this entire process once you give us a call.
You can absolutely take advantage of our treatment for those who want more TMS than what is covered by their insurance or who still want TMS though their insurance has declined to cover it. We enjoy working with each individual to identify a structure that works.
We actually encourage you to keep consistent with all of your medications while doing TMS without any changes. Keep the same Caffeine routine, avoid alcohol and drugs, and do not make other changes to your typical routine like sleep, minimize emotional distress, etc.
TMS is typically an easily accepted treatment and usually the side effect profile is very mild or nil. Most often the reported side effect is discomfort on the scalp at or around the TMS delivery site, because it can feel like a tapping sensation on the scalp. https://www.healthline.com/health/tms-therapy#effectiveness
