SPRAVATO / Esketamine is a ground-breaking treatment for major depression. This treatment is available at The Center For Integrative Psychiatry. Esketamine is a nasal spray that is prescribed to treat treatment-resistant depression. Unlike oral antidepressants, which can take weeks to months to work, the effects are typically felt within hours, opening a path to healing for patients who have not responded to oral antidepressants and/or therapy alone.

The Science Behind Spravato
The exact mechanism of Spravato is unknown, however we believe that it works by blocking the NMDA receptor. This leads to a downstream increased release of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). BDNF is an amazing molecule which does a tremendous amount of good in the brain, including helping the brain to physically grow, by establishing new connections between nerve cells. This is called “neuro-genesis”, or the creation of new “neurons” or in this case new neuronal connections. Absolutely amazing!
This is where the benefits of Spravato and its derivatives seem to come from mostly. In other words, depression can cause us to lose or weaken neuronal connections, but antidepressant as well as Spravato, meditating, TMS, exercise and many many other things can help us to regrow new brain cell connections. These new connections can help us think faster, feel better and be more relaxed and in control!

The Science behind Spravato
Spravato targets the glutamate system in the brain, which is essential for normal brain function. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that is abundant in the body and is responsible for sending a signal between nerve cells.

Although the precise mechanism of action of Spravato is unknown, it is thought to create new brain connections, allowing behavioral and cognitive changes to occur more readily and rapidly in patients with treatment-resistant depression. In clinical trials, patients treated with Spravato had a 69% response rate and a 52% remission rate.
