What the letters mean

Psychiatry has a lot of initials. Here's who does what, in plain English, so you know exactly who you're seeing.

MD · Psychiatrist

A medical doctor specializing in mental health who can diagnose and prescribe medication.

PMHNP

Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner — an advanced-practice nurse who evaluates, diagnoses, and prescribes for mental-health conditions.

FNP

Family Nurse Practitioner — an advanced-practice nurse trained to care for patients across the lifespan.

PA

Physician Associate — a licensed clinician who evaluates, diagnoses, and manages treatment within a physician-led team.

LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor — a master's-level therapist providing talk therapy. An LPC-Associate is fully qualified and practices under a licensed supervisor.

LMFT

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist — a therapist specializing in relationships and family systems.

ND

Naturopathic Doctor — trained in natural, whole-person approaches to health and wellness.

PharmD

Doctor of Pharmacy — a medication expert; here, focused on integrative and functional care.
